Plant Fiber

We are not able to raise sheep here at Trowes’ Tracks and Hentilagets, but we are looking into growing local plants for plant fiber to use in spinning. Watch this space for news as it grows!

The first potting: Perhaps the beginning of a plant fiber experiment? These are bast-producing plants that can be harvested and spun into a plant based yarn. Perhaps the start of a Bast Garden at Trowes’ Tracks and Hentilagets- who knows? Clockwise from the top: Lemongrass, Swamp Milkweed, Stinging Nettle.

Lemongrass, Milkweed, Nettle, and Dogbane are among the “bast” plants whose fibers can be prepared for spinning.

We hope to be working with the Green-Grace program of Grace Episcopal Church in Chattanooga. (See side menu.)

“Bast” plants arrive from Growers Exchange in Virginia for our plant fiber garden: Lemongrass, Nettle, and Swamp Milkweed.
